8 Must-Do Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Car Humming

When you buy a new car, you fully expect to get many years – and miles – out of it. Any you will – if you follow some important preventive maintenance tips.

Many people don’t do what they should to care for their vehicle and end up with extra repairs and issues they could have avoided. So, what should you be doing to make sure your car stays in good working condition for a long time?

1. Always consult your owner’s manual

One of the most important “parts” of your vehicle is in the glove box, not under your hood. Your owner’s manual is filled with valuable, vital information that’s specific to your car’s make and model.

2. Tire pressure is important

Did you know that under-inflated tires have a much shorter lifespan than those that are properly filled? Plus, you won’t get great gas mileage, either.

On the other hand, over-inflated tires put you at risk for a blowout which can be dangerous. It’s recommended that you get a good tire gauge and check the tire pressure about once a month.

3. Get a tire rotation

You want your tires to wear evenly. Your trusted mechanic can clue you in as to how often this needs to be done AND your all-important owner’s manual will give you guidelines, too.

4. Get regular oil changes

You’re probably thinking, “I know, I know! Every 3,000 miles or 3 months.” Well, that information is a bit outdated – especially if your vehicle is new.

Again, always defer to your owner’s manual (you’ll be hearing that a LOT!), but newer cars can usually go 5,000 to 6,000 miles between oil changes.

5. How are your windshield wipers?

It’s easy, it’s inexpensive, and it’s a safety issue. Change your windshield wipers any time they seem to be not working efficiently, they’re torn, warped, or at least twice a year.

6. Pay attention to your driving habits

Your vehicle will sustain more wear at higher speeds. Long story short? Obey the speed limits and slow down for speed bumps and other rough terrain.

7. Change your timing belt

This can be a hazardous failure if it happens while you’re driving. A good rule of thumb is to have this belt changed every 60,000 miles.

Guess what? Your owner’s manual and your mechanic will have more specific info depending on your car’s make and model.

8. Check your battery

A dead battery can put a serious damper on an otherwise fun time. Periodically having yours checked will prevent this from stranding you somewhere. Most mechanics will do it for you for a minimal fee.
