Fall is a Great Time for a Vehicle Tune-Up

Fall is the time when the air takes on that crisp feel.

The wind blows the crunchy leaves around and you get to bust out your jackets and sweaters.

That’s all wonderful until your vehicle breaks down and you’re stranded in that crisp air with the blowing leaves.

You can avoid being “that” guy or gal by making sure your vehicle’s ready for fall.

When you take your car to a trusted mechanic, he’ll be looking at these areas.

Lights, heat, and wipers

Fall days are shorter and you’ll be using your headlights more than you have been. Your mechanic will make sure your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are all working properly.

Your heater and defroster will be getting a good workout, so they need to be checked out, too.

Wiper blades may seem like a trivial matter until you’re in the middle of a fall downpour and yours are in poor shape!

Brakes and tires

One of the things the mechanic will do when he has your car is to check out the brakes – they are the most important safety feature on your vehicle.

The tread depth of your tires should be adequate and the tires should be properly inflated. This is especially important if you live in an area that experiences early snow. Make sure the spare is included in the inspections!

Gas, oil, and filters

As the weather begins to get cooler, keep your gas tank at least half full at all times. This can prevent moisture from collecting and maybe freezing in your gas lines.

Your mechanic can tell you if an oil change is necessary, but clean oil will help your car to run better in the cold weather.

When your car is in the shop, the transmission, oil, and fuel filters will be checked and changed, if necessary.

Exhaust, cooling, and charging systems

Chilly weather can be rough on your vehicle’s battery. Part of your tune-up will include an inspection of the battery and charging system.

It may be time for cleaning and flushing your cooling system, as well as adding fresh antifreeze. Your mechanic will know if this is something that your car needs at this time!

Your windows stay closed in cold weather, so it’s especially important that the exhaust system isn’t malfunctioning, which could cause a dangerous carbon monoxide leak.

Bring on the fall

After your mechanic has given your vehicle a clean bill of health, you can take on those fall road trips with confidence.
