See the Best Fall Foliage on These 5 Stunning Road Trips

As the air takes on that crisp, autumn-y feel, do you get the urge to hit the road?

The U.S. is full of areas that put on quite a glorious show in the fall. From yellow and gold to deep oranges and reds, the landscape in certain regions of the country is well worth the visit.

Let’s take a look at some of the best areas for taking in the fall foliage.

The Maryland Panhandle

In the mountains of western Maryland, you can find deep, winding, rivers, dense forests, and cozy little towns that have inns with breathtaking views of the changing leaves.

One of the best spots to visit is the Casselman Bridge, located in Grantsville, which is a mountain village whose residents are mainly Amish and Mennonite.

The West Virginia Midland Trail

There’s nothing quite like the views you get when driving through southern West Virginia in the fall.

A highlight of this area is Hawk’s Nest State Park, where you can ride a gondola through a gorge that’s blazing with color in the autumn.

The trail itself is approximately 120 miles of twists, turns, and beautiful landscape.

The Gold Coast of Michigan

This 100-mile drive along the northeast shore of Lake Michigan will take you through sand dunes and fishing towns, but the best part just might the pick-your-own-apples orchard in the town of Northport.

The changing leaves really stand out here because the area is surrounded by evergreens. The peak season is mid- to late September.

The Vermont Green Mountain Byway

Cattle, quaint villages, and old time general stores are all a part of this beautiful drive that takes you right through the heart of Vermont.

If there are any history buffs in your family, you may want to stop at Plymouth Notch and see the home of our 30th president, Calvin Coolidge.

The area is quite popular in the fall, so it’s suggested that you book accommodations early. You can even take fall foliage tours.

The Coast of Maine and Route 1

Who wouldn’t love to see the beautiful autumn leaves and the Maine seashore in one trip?

Some of the high points of the trip are Acadia National Park, Cape Elizabeth, and a hike on the Sargent Mountain Loop.

This is a great trip for lighthouse lovers, too!
