Older vehicle designs often used separate V-belts for individual accessories — one for the alternator, one for the cooling fan, and so on — rather than the single serpentine belt found on most modern vehicles. While this older system meant losing only one accessory if a particular belt failed, it also meant more individual belts to inspect and maintain over the life of the vehicle.
