Ignition Wires

Conrads Flag

Spark plug wires carry an enormous electrical charge — tens of thousands of volts — from the ignition coil or distributor to each spark plug, and that constant high-voltage stress combined with engine heat eventually breaks down their insulation. Conrad’s Tire Express & Total Car Care's ASE-Certified Technicians inspect and replace ignition wires as part of a complete tune-up, and scheduling the work online takes just a few minutes.

Conrad's has kept ignition systems firing reliably across Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania since 1969, and our 50+ locations throughout the region make staying current on this maintenance easy.

What Spark Plug Wires Do

Ignition wires — sometimes called high-tension leads — route the high-voltage pulse generated by the ignition system to each spark plug in turn, where that charge jumps the plug gap and ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture. Internally, they use a resistive core wrapped in multiple layers of heat-resistant insulation designed to contain that voltage and suppress electrical interference along the way.

Worth noting: not every modern vehicle uses spark plug wires at all. Many newer engines use coil-on-plug ignition, where individual coils sit directly above each plug and eliminate the wire entirely. Vehicles with a distributor or a remote coil pack still rely on wires, and those are the ones where this service applies.

Our Ignition Wire Services

Wire Resistance Testing

We test each wire with a multimeter to check for resistance beyond acceptable limits — a wire can look intact on the outside while carrying far less spark energy than it should.

Full Set Replacement

We replace the complete set together rather than swapping a single wire, since they age at a similar rate and a mismatched set creates inconsistent spark across cylinders.

Distributor Cap & Rotor Service

On vehicles that use a distributor, we inspect the cap and rotor for wear at the same time, since a worn contact point there can mimic or compound a wire problem.

Why This Service Matters

  • Degraded wires with high resistance weaken the spark enough to cause incomplete combustion and noticeable misfires.
  • Cracked insulation can let voltage arc to a nearby metal surface instead of reaching the plug, disrupting ignition timing.
  • A persistent misfire from bad wires can send raw fuel into the exhaust and damage your catalytic converter over time.
  • Strong, consistent spark across every cylinder is directly tied to both power delivery and fuel economy.
  • Replacing wires as part of a scheduled tune-up is far cheaper than dealing with the catalytic converter damage that follows ignored misfires.

What to Expect at Your Conrad’s Visit

Ignition wire service at Conrad's is typically bundled into a complete tune-up. Our ASE-Certified Technicians test existing wires, replace the full set when warranted, and check the distributor cap and rotor on applicable vehicles. A Digital Vehicle Inspection rounds out the visit. With 50+ locations across Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, financing available, and clear warranty details on installed parts, this is a straightforward maintenance item to stay on top of.

Schedule Your Service Today

Don't let degraded ignition wires quietly rob your engine of power and efficiency. Schedule ignition wire service online at any of Conrad's 50+ locations across Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and trust our ASE-Certified Technicians, serving drivers since 1969, to get your spark delivery back to full strength.

How can I tell if my spark plug wires are failing?

A rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, and a check engine light with a misfire code are the usual indicators. Visible cracking in the wire insulation is another sign worth acting on.
