Tie rod ends are the final link between your steering system and your wheels, and when they wear out, the connection between turning the wheel and the car actually responding starts to feel loose and imprecise. Conrad’s Tire Express & Total Car Care's ASE-Certified Technicians inspect and replace worn tie rod ends, and you can get this checked with an online appointment.
Conrad's has restored steering precision for drivers across Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania since 1969, and with 50+ locations region-wide, getting this addressed is rarely inconvenient.
What Tie Rod Ends Do
On rack-and-pinion systems, inner tie rod ends connect to the steering rack itself, while outer tie rod ends connect that linkage to the steering knuckle at the wheel. Both use a ball-and-socket design that allows the rod to pivot smoothly as the suspension moves and the wheels turn through their full steering range.
A protective rubber boot keeps grease inside the joint and contaminants out. Once that boot cracks or tears — often from age or a road debris impact — grease escapes and dirt works its way in, and the joint wears out far faster than it otherwise would have.
Our Tie Rod End Services
Steering Linkage Inspection
We check both inner and outer tie rod ends on each side for play and inspect boot condition since a torn boot signals accelerated wear is likely already underway.
Outer Tie Rod Replacement
The most commonly replaced tie rod component, outer ends are swapped and followed immediately by a wheel alignment to restore correct toe settings.
Inner Tie Rod Replacement
Less frequently worn but still checked, inner tie rod ends require accessing the rack boot for replacement and are addressed when wear is confirmed there.
Wheel Alignment
Tie rod replacement always changes toe angle slightly, so an alignment afterward is essential to prevent rapid, uneven tire wear.
Why This Service Matters
- Worn tie rod ends let the wheel move with a delay relative to your steering input, which compromises precise control.
- Uneven tire wear from worn tie rods can shorten the life of an otherwise healthy set of tires significantly.
- A tie rod end that fails completely results in an immediate and serious loss of steering control on that wheel.
- Steering wheel vibration or shimmy often traces back to tie rod wear once other causes are ruled out.
- Catching tie rod wear early, before it's severe, keeps the repair simpler and the alignment more straightforward.
